BIOMIMICRY

The term biomimcry is a combination of the Greek words bios (life) and mimesis (imitation). It’s an approach that seeks out innovative, sustainable solutions to today's challenges by recognizing and applying the patterns, processes, and strategies that nature has perfected over billions of years.

BIOMIMICRY AND BRANDING

On average, an adult can recognize and identify about one thousand commercial brands, but fewer than ten trees and plants. Artificial, human-derived images dominate our perception of the world and the context in which we live. We've lost contact with our nature — the living things, organic structure, and biologic processes that surround and support us every day of our lives. Unsurprisingly, we now base our solutions not in nature's dynamic methods, but in an endless cycle of idea regeneration.

So, the question is, how do we implement biomimicry in branding? In examining a brand, we wonder what nature would do. Utilizing methodologies from Biomimcry 3.8, we search for patterns, systems, and behaviors in the natural world that can be emulated to steer a brand’s growth. The effect can be elemental in parts or a total and complete fusion.

THE BLUEARTH APPROACH

The foundation of our industry expertise comes from Deskey, where design has shaped life for more than 85 years. We helped invent modern branding, and our people have driven product design for some of America’s most iconic brands. Now we’re leveraging that experience at BluEarth to align with biomimicry’s principles. We seek to build practices that find inspiration in nature to more sustainably solve strategy, branding, and design challenges.

Everything we do — relationship building and management, project work, etc. — is rooted in systems and approaches that nature has honed over billions of years. We have nurtured a base of worldwide green consumer knowledge through personal interviews and consumer panels. We have also developed a green network with regional and national sustainability organizations and academic institutions. And we partner with groups whose intentions are to positively change our collective future through sustainability.

BluEarth enables him to bring his desire for sustainable packaging and design into the creative stream that he has successfully navigated for more than 30 years.

At BluEarth, we’re rethinking how brands come to be, shifting the focus using the principles of biomimicry to put what we create more in harmony with life itself.
